Six Advices to Succeed in Online Paid Surveys

2009-03-14

I have been working with many survey sites in the Internet and I have learnt a lot of lessons. I learnt some of these when I was researching about online survey sites and most of these lessons are learnt by experience. So I thought to share my knowledge with the rest of the world hoping it would help someone out there.

So in this article, I will give a set of advices that I have learnt in the hard way…

Rule 1 – Don’t Select Survey Sites From Lists Rated By Other People

Many people in the Internet are involved in affiliate marketing. Many surveying sites pay bloggers when they refer a new person to their site. So don’t believe in those lists such as “Top 10 Most Paid Survey Sites”, “Top 5 Survey Companies”, etc. because the TOP site of those lists is the site that pays the blogger most! So my advice is not to believe in those ranked lists.

Rule 2 – Ask the site this question: ” What Do I Get For Responding To Surveys? “

The answer depends on the site you are going to work with. Some sites pay money and some sites pay by other means such as coupon codes and sweepstakes entries while some sites are charity sites where you get non-paid public service surveys.

Rule 3 – Work Only For Cash

As I mentioned there are many sites which pays you in indirect methods such as coupon codes. My advice is never work on surveys unless they pay you by money because there is no way to measure the value of your work. They will give you a coupon code or sweepstakes entry at the end of your days work and you still have to go around the corner to get your own earnings. Since most of the times these are given as discounts, you have to spend more money and buy something to apply those discounts. In simple words, you only feel you earn but you never get your earnings into your hands.

The worst problem is some coupon codes may not be useful for you at the moment and some discounts may not be available in your region. You have to take this very seriously if you are not living in the same country or region as the origin of the site where it is operational.

Rule 4 – Check Available Payment Methods

Your computer may simply get surveys through the site without any problems or delays but it doesn’t mean your payment gets to your bank account in the same speed. Go and check the payment options supported by the site. Some sites support various payment methods while some sites only have one or two methods.

For most payment methods there are limitations across countries. This isn’t a problem if you are located in the same country where the site is operational but if you are living in a different region or a country you have to be more concerned about this matter.
For an example, you may be able to create a Paypal account from your country but you may not be able to accept payments to that account because Paypal doesn’t support that service in your country. In such situations if your site does not have suitable options you may lose your money.

Rule 5 – Don’t Go After Fortunes

There’s no such thing as easy money! Remember this as you go on finding for survey sites because you will face sites that say they would pay bulks of money for each survey. My advice according to what I have learnt so far is don’t go for those sites because the more money they promise, the more chances for that site to be a scam. Unfortunately, many people around the world get into these scams everyday. The best thing is to find a site that pays a reasonable and especially practical price for your work.

Rule 6 – Work Hard! There’s No Boss To Push You Forward!

If you are working in a company then you have a boss looking at you to make sure you meet company expectations and to kick you off if you lose performance. In this case, you are your own boss. The good news is there’s no one to kick you off and you own everything you earn. The bad news is you have to take care of everything. Especially you have to keep your motivation up. It’s not easy to do something of your own without postponing. You must dedicate yourself to the work at least till you reach a solid level of ground to stand on.

In this new office you don’t have office times. You have your freedom and at the same time you have all responsibilities on your shoulders. In simple words, It’s your baby go ahead and grow it!

Don’t look for fortunes, Work hard and make your own fortune!

The Blood Brain Barrier

2009-01-08

I wouldn’t be wrong if I say the Brain is the most vital organ in the human body. As we all know brain handles most of critical operations inside our body such as keeping and managing memories, organizing our activities, keep other organs perform, and so much more.

The Brain, as most of us already know, works by sending electric signals through complex meshes of neurons so the brain has to maintain a good environment around to keep the accuracy of this electrical signal flow.

The environment inside the brain is the brain fluid so the ingredients or components of the brain fluids are very critical to the functionalities of brain.

Any organ of the body gets the supplies it needs through blood and so does the brain. Ingredients of human blood vary depending on the situation, food, problems of other organs, etc. so it is obvious that the blood is not the same all the time.

Not like other organs, the brain has to think a lot before extracting anything from blood because if the chemical levels of brain fluid vary it directly affects the signals passed through neurons. If the brain fluid is not maintained in an optimum level, the environment will become too noisy for neurons and sending signals would become like talking in the middle of a party.

So there is this Blood-Brain Barrier (which is also referred to as BBB) which extracts the necessary ingredients such as Oxygen and Glucose and make sure nothing else is taken in.

Blood-Brain Barrier Diagram

blood-brain-barrier

Where is Blood-Brain Barrier Located?

BBB is located at the brain blood capillaries. These capillaries are unusual in several aspects from capillaries in other organs. Those aspects are briefly described below:

  • The end-points of cells which make up the walls of these capillaries are sealed together at their edges by tight junctions which are a key component in the barrier. These junctions make sure that water soluble substances in the blood don’t pass between the edges of cells.
  • These capillaries are enclosed by flattened cells which altogether called the ‘end-feet’ which also work as a (partial and active) barrier.
  • The only way for water soluble substances in the blood is through the walls of capillaries. These walls plays the other role in the barrier because their cell membranes are made up of a lipid/protein belayed only allowing flat-soluble molecules including those of oxygen and carbon dioxide, anesthetics and alcohol to pass through the walls of capillaries.
  • In the capillary wall there are three classes of ‘efflux pumps’ which pumps various lipid-soluble molecules back in to the blood out of the brain.

However, the brain needs water soluble compounds such as Glucose for energy production and amino acids for protein synthesis so there are these Carriers in the walls of capillaries which allow those compounds to go through the wall and move waste products and unwanted molecules in the opposite direction.

The blood-brain barrier plays another key role in keeping the volume of the brain at a constant level. Since the brain is contained inside a rigid skull it is important to keep the fluid from free movement thus keeping volume of the brain static.

Problems Related to BBB

Even though BBB is made in the sole purpose of protecting the brain, it has become a barrier to medicine to access the brain. Since many medicines are water soluble, they are barricaded at the BBB. This process has made it very hard to treat brain tumors and infections such as AIDS virus.

In fact, AIDS virus uses BBB as a shield by hiding behind the BBB from body defense mechanisms.

Due to such reasons medicine has to be made as fat-soluble but then a new problem arises because then the medicine will be absorbed by most cells of the body which may be toxic.

The alternatives are making drug molecules that can ride on natural transporter proteins or use drugs that can open the Blood-Brain-Barrier.

Looking Back at 2008!

2008-12-31

I am not happy about my last year because I did not make much significant achievements on my carrier in the year! At the beginning of the year I had a goal to obtain MCTS certification but I could not achieve that.

However there were some small achievements as well:

What I feel as the best achievement of the last year is this blog itself. I made this on November and I am very happy about this because it feels so great to see someone out there is reading my posts.

A software solution provider company chose me as a technical consultant to solve their problems and I am so happy that I could solve many problems that many of their staff could not solve. I consider this as one of my major achievements of the last year.

I have survived in my work place and after taking the recent lay-offs into my consideration, I would take this as an achievement!

I could take my family on a trip and they were so happy about it and we all enjoyed it. It was the best personal achievement for me!

Also me and my girl friend could go several short picnics to beautiful places like beaches. Those were romantic achievements to me because those moments brought us even closer to each other!

I don’t remember everything I achieved or missed through out the last year at this moment so I will publish this post at this point and will update as I remember…!

5 Ways to Get Rid of Financial Stress and Optimal Utilization of Money

2008-12-14

With the rise of Global Financial Crisis, Financial stress has become a hot topic in the Internet. Since I am also a victim, I thought to make a small research on this. In this post I am trying my best to explain what I gained during my research. I hope you would find this interesting!

We go to school, high school, university, technical colleges, … etc. then we find a job, then focus on collecting additional qualifications to climb the ladder… etc.

Why do we do these things? Yes to have a happy life, to make the life better.

If we keep the other factors like qualifications apart for a while, we earn money to make sure we have a happy life but in the middle of the way we become exhausted and stressed out just because of money which is meant to make our life better.

100 people would give 100 explanations for this as different people could see this from different angles. Some may say it’s a foolishness to make the life stressed out for money while some other would say that it is worth taking that stress because there’s almost nothing that can achieved without a sound financial standing.

In this article, I am not trying to elaborate on these complicated and human dependent explanations but rather I would introduce the five ways that I found as helpful to reduce financial stress and I will try to inject my experience into each method when ever I feel applicable.

1 Separate Needs from Wants

It would be safe if I say that we are living in a world where marketing plays a major role. For any industry, marketing has become a crucial factor.

Today’s marketing professionals are very tricky and would sell a ‘trip around the world’ ticket at a gas station for a guy who simply stops for a quick refill.

As a result of this tricky marketing environment most of us have become unable to separate our needs from our wants. For an instance someday in last month I went to a super market to buy cartridges for my Gillette 7 ‘O clock razor which I have been using for more than a year but I came out with a Gillette Mach3 razor because there was a perfectly organized marketing campaign inside the supermarket which could make me literally forget what I had planned to buy. I knew I was going for something which was not crucial for me or something I want, in other words but I could not help myself out of the situation.

So how could we overcome such situations without doing exactly what marketing guys expect from us? Well, different people use different strategies. Some people don’t keep credit cards, some people don’t keep extra money, etc. Even though these methods look very effective (and may be they are effective) these methods have their cons as well. Like we can never replace the benefits we get from credit or debit cards from money.

Well, I know this sounds like impractical but I still believe in controlling the thought itself. Even though I have not met perfection, I have practiced this for some time and it works to some extent. What I do when I meet something that I want is make a small argument in my heart where I think what would I lose if I spend for this at this moment. So, most of the time, I have seen that my short term financial goals get affected by purchasing such things. At that time it becomes much more comfortable to leave the place without buying it.

As I leave the place without buying…, I think like, “What’s the big rush, I can allocate some money for this in next month’s budget and buy this…” so I don’t become disappointed at that moment.

2 Change the Attitude Towards Money

This is something I newly learned from my research. I was used to be very upset when I don’t have as much as money I thought that suit my qualification and experience levels. This truly leads us to a huge stress because we always feel disappointed and spend most of the time thinking what we cannot achieve with current financial standing. So how can we possibly get rid of these feelings? Well, I could find many suggestions such as meditating and yoga I am not against these methods buy I believe more on the other thing I learned which is positive thinking. We usually think about what we cannot do but we rarely think about what we cannot do.

I was used to be sad when I see when other people are traveling by their cars while I ride my bike. But I never noticed the significantly larger number of people who walk while I ride…!

3 Ask for Help

This is something most of us don’t like to do! In many societies asking for financial help is considered as an act of weakness but we can always ask for help or instructions to improve our financial management skills. If we get the right help at the right time to improve this skill, we will be able to survive in many financial problems without asking for direct financial help.

4 Don’t Keep Debt

What am I talking? Nobody likes to keep debt….!

Yes, it’s true, but the reality is we do keep debt around us. The most common trap for most of us is credit cards. Most of us think these paper-like pieces of plastic have amazing powers to bring things that are impossible to achieve with the power of our monthly wages.

The very simple yet strong truth is “Nothing Is Free”. Credit cards only bring the good to our hands and put the payment to the future. Of course this becomes a great help in certain situations.

I do not blame credit cards or credit card owners. A credit card is a powerful tool like fire, if we use it wisely we can make our day to day life much better and of course if we lose the grip we are doomed!

The most common mistake people do with credit cards is paying the minimum due payment and let the interest add up. I have this great lesson learned from my first credit card. I used that credit card so freely and paid the whole amount regularly in the beginning but eventually I started to pay only the minimum payment due. The interest kept growing and I did not care for about a year and I only realize how much I have paid when I made the sum after my father instructed me. I had paid several times of my initial amount of debt as interest.

After that incident my father gave me a nice advice. He said:

“Id doesn’t matter how you pay or when you pay, you do have to pay your debts someday. The only difference is you have to pay with an extra interest if you pay late, so why not pay it at the first possible time and save the interest?”

5 Make a Budget and Stick to It

Most of us already are good in making a budget. It’s the later part that makes us sweat! How to stick to the budget?

Well, in this case we have no excuses against paper work! We have to have a clear idea on our fixed expenditures such as phone bills, water bills, etc. We cannot skip paying these bills so we must allocate funds to these expenditures as the very first step.

Then make the list of other expenditures you wish to make in this month such as that handy new razor, expensive perfume, New Five star dines, Oh what am I doing? You don’t need examples on this. Do you?

The listing is always fun but then comes the worst part; you have to prioritize these expenditures and cut the less important ones. I know it’s hard! Keep in mind that this is your own good when allocating money…!

Wait…! Before you allocate money for the second type of expenditure we just discussed, allocate a certain amount of money as the saving for the period and consider it as an important expenditure you cannot cut so that you will not consider your saving as an option in the middle when executing your planned budget.

Basically, this is the whole idea behind a happy life with a less (I wouldn’t say “no”) financial stress.

Before we end this discussion, I’d like to remind you that we do need money to live this life and we do have to earn it! The most important thing is we have to make sure that in the middle of the way while trying to make money, we should not forget the fact that we have to use money to bring HAPPINESS into our life.

Money alone can do nothing but money and a wise mind can do anything!

Failures are the Pillars of Success!

2008-12-01

Today I went to the embassy to get the response for the visa application I submitted about a month back.

I had kept a lot of hopes on this. Today was like a junction in my life. If I get the permission to work, I would get a much better financial standing, more qualifications, more experience, etc.

So I went and waited on the queue waiting for the officer to read my name.

Mean while I remembered what my mother told me before I had to switch off my phone in-order to enter this office. She told me that what ever the result could be, don’t worry because God always have a plan for you and it will always show you the best possible path even it might look not great at this moment.

So while I was in the queue, I prayed God and asked him to make me strong to hold on to what ever the result that I would get in a while.

At the end I got my response and when I opened to cover I saw the letter headed “Notice of Refusal”. Yes I felt all my dreams crashing but only for a while. Don’t think I am trying to make myself a God’s child but within minutes I could recover because I had much worst experience where initially I though I failed but later I realized it was the best path for me.

I thanked God for making me comfortable with the result I received and then I went to meet my lawyer who prepared my application. After going thorough the letter I received, my lawyer start laughing, the person who examined my application had made a lot of mistakes. Lawyer promised me that he could argue on these matters and get my application approved.

After that talk he said that he would like to talk on a different topic with me and told me about starting his dream company. The company needs reliable software to make its decisions in other words the company would operate on the software. He had tried many Indians before and even one of his friends but he has never been able to make his dream come true. So he asked me whether I could make the software for him. According to my experience I felt like it would not be a huge challenge so I agreed to do it.

I don’t say that making software would replace all my dreams I had on having a work permit in rich country but I could win his heart and make him more prone to get my work done while I am working on to make his dream come true.

So what I want to emphasize here is that we have to be positive at every times regardless of the outcome. When I got that letter, I could simply get upset and go home or I could lose my enthusiasm on everything and make me the saddest guy on earth.

I learnt from it…

If my application was accepted at the first glance, I would never know how it feels when this type of hope is dissolved and very specially how to overcome this type of a situation which is a very valuable experience.

And I am very happy for getting this experience at this age itself. Because I had my parents to back me up rather than having this type of experience when I am a parent which I assume a much harder to face.

As I said in an earlier post…,

It’s all about the way we see things…

Postponing – Makes your goals blot away and ruins your personal life

2008-11-30

I have been postponing things since I don’t know when…

I consider this as a major mistake that we all make and the most unfortunate thing is that we don’t feel we are going down because postponing takes us down slowly. In other words, you will not even notice that you have not checked your eyes until it’s been a year since when it was initially planned.

Yes it is that bad and even worse…

The main reason for many people to end up with postponing is the busy life most of us are living today.

Most of us are very good at work and never postpone a single office work. Then the important things in personal life get piled almost kissing the sun.

Most of us only have the weekend for all our personal life work. And the worst of all is it’s the weekend that we can sit and get a rest.

So what ever the important thing that should be done in this weekend gets LESS URGENT and easily gets postponed to the next. Of course, hoping there won’t be any new movies next week!

Let me discuss some experience of mine:

  • Lat December (2007) I brought my coffee cup to home thinking I should clean it thoroughly before start using the next year. My mother washed it and returned it to me so that I could take it back to office the day after. But every morning when I get ready to go, I did not get the cup which was lying on my table because I had to rearrange my backpack to accommodate a round shape thing. Believe me it’s been a year for now and the cup still lies on my table … !
  • I checked my eyes last March and I forgot to bring my old specs or any details of my previous checking of eyes and unfortunately I had to go to a new doctor from whom I had last checked when I was a kid. So he checked my eyes without any clue of previous checks. But he certainly did not do a good job and my eyes rejected the new specs. Even though he told that it was natural and would be all right in some time, my eyes kept rejecting new specs. Then I decided to recheck the specs with my usual doctor. If I go to him I have to take a leave on a weekday or have to go Saturday night. Trust me I am still wearing the same specs and my eyes are still rejecting it and I am working 9-12 hours everyday in front of computer with this pair of specs making my eyes double tired.

I can write hundreds of such experience here but rather I would like to discuss how I feel about this situation.

You may think I am a so ignorant stupid. Actually I am not (at least I don’t think so) I loved my coffee cup but I lived without it for a year… How? If anyone told me not to use my coffee cup for a year, I would fight with him. But I, by myself didn’t use it for a year…!

If someone asked me to use wrong specs for more than 8 months 10 hours a day, I would kill him because I love my eyes. But I just did that by myself…!

How did I do this?

Yes, I found how I did it, I never painted the big picture nor had even an idea of what I was drawing, I always drew a tiny pixel at a time.

I never wanted to lose my cup for a year; I only wanted to take the cup on the next day. Everyday I thought that I would only lose it for a day and I could live with it.

I never wanted to hurt my eyes without which I don’t even want to try living. But I could live with it for a single week. Every time I was postponing my checking only for a week.

So as we can clearly see we always have calm and quiet reason to justify the single unit level postpones which alone does not make any visible impact on us. But together, as the time go, it’s those tiny pixels that makes the big picture which is once drawn can never be re-painted.

So how could we get rid of this?

Well, I would like to get the lesson from my first great teacher, yes my mother.

She does a job and also does all house work without a servant.

Every night she prepares the need to make tomorrows cooking which she start doing in the early morning around 4.00 am.

If I was her, I would postpone the preparation for tomorrow morning. But she never does that because she knows that she would never get enough time to finish cooking with quality and dress-up for the office before 7.00 am.

Even if she is sick, she never postpones a single task…

Yes she has the will that I don’t have. She has the power in her heart which I need to develop within my heart.

I think one should make his/her heart strong to stand against those tiny evils which suggests to postpone tiny things to make it comfortable for a small span of time but make the life worse long term.

Tough Guy Or Nice Guy?

2008-11-23

Yesterday I bought this new book “How to get what you want from almost anybody” today I could read the introduction of the book and thought to put what I learnt from that as today’s post.

The author explains one of his experiences at air port. The guy who was before him in the queue to get the plane booked after a flight got cancelled. The guy was a straight guy or in other words who simply says what he feels to the face.

The guy had asked for a well placed seat from the first class. Since he was a frequent flyer, he was well respected and recognized from the airline.

When the author went to the counter, after a gentle chat, he asked the person in the counter how hard his job was and he found that the bags of that tough guy has been put in a different (wrong) plane by the person in the counter willingly.

The author has approached the scenario in a different method. He was very gentle with the guy in the counter. When the counter guy asked him what seat he wants, he told the guy he would take any seat from any section of the flight and asked guy to keep the good seats to deal with tough guys.

However, when he got into the plane, surprisingly he was asked to sit in a very good window seat in the first class (the author himself also was a frequent flyer and well recognized).

The first guy is not wrong, he was upset because his flight was cancelled and he had lost his booked nice seat and had to settle for any available seat. So his anger would be justifiable in certain angles.

What he specifies at the end is…

” What do you want most? Is it the thrill of knowing that you are absolutely right, or would you be willing to sacrifice a bit of righteousness in exchange for pleasant, hassle-free service? “

I would not agree with what the author says because it’s not easy to stand silence and be calm when you lose something for some others mistake or problem.

I also have many experiences where I have acted the role of both the tough guy and the nice guy. I also believe that the nice guy approach makes people happy but yes, you may not feel comfortable leaving without talking against the wrong…

But at least it gets the work done which is considered as most important by most of the people of this era …

It’s all about the way we see…

2008-11-22

Today I went to a party at my dad’s office. There I met this wonderful person who is 57 years old now.

Let me tell something that I found about him:

He’s 57 years old now and married. His wife still works abroad as a house maid and his all sisters are abroad in Australia.

Even though he’s married since a long time ago, he was not blessed with children. His father has already passed away and his mom is healthy but she lives in Australia with his sisters.

His sisters have tried many times to take him to Australia but at all those times authorities had rejected him due to his age.

Once he was even rejected to visit his sisters EVEN for a short period!

From this smal job he gets a very small salary about 100 US $ and his sisters sends him 200 Australian dollars once a month by which he manages to pay his bills and get other needs.

Even though he’s getting a very low salary, he bears a great deal fo responsibilities. Once, as he explained me, he had to go and buy things for few Indians who were hired to assemble a automatic plant.

When he was going to attend that, the waste removal truck has appeared which is also his responsibility. So he has waited for that to finish before go for the other work. But a manager has told him to go and get things while the truck was doin its job.

While he was away, the truck have accidently dumped a large amount of trash on a pipe which then made a huge leak in the glue storage tank making a loss of 40,000 Sri Lankan Rupees (Like 400 US$). Since the manager did not accept he instructed my friend to go, my friend had to pay the loss! 400 US $ may be not a huge some for you but for his salary this was huge.

And I forgot to mention that he once have also had a heart attack….!

So ….

When he was talking like this, you may think that he was a poor guy with a very unhappy life, just the way I thought.

But for my surprice, he was the most happy guy there and there was a genuine smile in his face all the time and it was very pleasent to talk with him.

The best thing is….

He told me that he beleives a lot in God and told me that he has a secret prayer which keeps him so happy and makes lord give him a very successful life and told me that since we are friends, he’d send that prayer to me through my father.

This reminded me a lesson on PARADIGMS….

It’s all about the way we see things that keeps us and people around us happy. He did not complain about those countless problems he had. He told those as challenges that he has faced and he told those things to me in a way as giving a lecture to a younger person.

He did not say God let him get an heart attack, He said, God saved me from that heart attack while many people die from their first heart attack…!

He did not worry because he had to pay a large sum of money for another guys fault eventhough he was upset for that guy’s dishonest behaviour. He was happy because his prayers had been answered and God has tought a lesson to the management though a huge loss on the company (in millions of rupees) due to another irresponsible decision work of the same manager.

What I learnt…

We should not see the worst side of anything that happens to us. Doing that does not solve that problem but only puts us to a even worse level.

We should change our lenses and try through different angles and I do think that we certainly can win the main objective of our life…

which is … HAPPINESS!!!

I learnt today…

2008-11-21

As an IT professional, I go through many problems, challenges and new stuff everyday.

Every challenge I face teaches me a new lesson. Every problem shows me a new path.

Also I come across new stuff daily through various methods.

The interesting thing is that someday somehow we meet the same problem again and I have experienced it. In many times, I have remembered that I have faced a similar situation in the past.

The problem is that I don’t remember how I faced it!

So I thought to start a blog and write down everything I learn in a day.

I expect several things from this:

  1. To keep a reference to things that I learn on a daily basis
  2. To help the world; If anyone faces the same problem after I did and searches the Internet for a solution, I would be pleased if my past experience could help that person.
  3. Someday, use this as a way to turn back and see the challenges I have faced in the past.

God, help me to keep the enthusiasm and continue this endeavor !
